You know how it is when you are like the last person on Earth to see a movie and everyone around you has hyped it up so much that you just have to go see it? They say things like, “Oh MY GAWD, the ENDING was AMAZING!” or “I totally did NOT see that coming!” Then you actually go to the movie and the whole time you are wondering when this big twist, this huge surprise is going to happen and then…. *crickets* Yeah, so I told you that to tell you this: I am kinda disappointed in Moth Brown. Please, don’t go grabbing your torches and pitchforks. Let me explain.
The Legend of Moth Brown began for me around the time I started blogging (Dec. 2010). My interest in it was piqued because, hello, it’s a taupe. And, oh, another hello, it was super limited edition and no longer available. Le sigh. So when I found out it was being repromoted in the By Request collection I knew she would finally be mine. The thing is, once I got her properly settled in she looked less and less amazing next to the other fabulous taupes already well-situated in their habitat that is my makeup room. The texture isn’t nearly as velvety as say Le Métier de Beauté’s Corinthian or Rouge Bunny Rouge’s Delicate Hummingbird and the dimension is lacking too. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely pretty. Just not *as* pretty as what else is already permanently available. Then again, it costs half as much as those other shades.

Swatches L-R: Chanel Taupe Gris, Chanel Fauve, MAC Satin Taupe, MAC Moth Brown, Rouge Bunny Rouge Delicate Hummingbird, Rouge Bunny Rouge Bohemian Waxwing, Le Métier de Beauté Corinthian
If I were to pick just one shade from above I would go with Delicate Hummingbird from Rouge Bunny Rouge. It may be personal preference but the shade and dimension is my favorite and it also has a fabulous buttery texture. Le Métier de Beauté Corinthian comes close though, but it more brown. I was surprised by how almost blue-toned Moth Brown looked when I applied it to my eyes.
Moth Brown is now sold out but don’t fret. I think any of the other above shades will do just fine if you are in search for your perfect taupe.
