Remembering My First Time… With NARS Cosmetics!

The other day I sat down to do some swatches in my makeup room and came upon some old favorites that I had forgotten about it. Then one thought led to another and soon I was trying to remember what products I first tried from a certain brand. The brand (as the title would imply) is NARS Cosmetics. It was about 3 years ago that I tried my first NARS product and although the brand and I have hit a few bumps along the way, my love for their products is strong. I currently own dozens of their products (all purchased by yours truly) and would never hesitate to purchase again. I thought I would showcase the items that introduced me to the brand, for the inquiring minds out there.

My First NARS Products

Clockwise from bottom left: NARS Strawberry Fields lipgloss, NARS Mangrove Single Shadow, NARS Rajasthan Eyeshadow Duo, NARS Douceur Blush, NARS Dolce Vita Lipstick

The funny thing is that most of these products were released around the same time. In fact, Strawberry Fields, Douceur, Rajasthan and Mangrove all came out in the Fall 2010 collection. That collection was a huge hit for me as I also bought the other eyeshadow duo, Tzarine and the other singles, Coconut Grove and Daphne. Dolce Vita is a permanent member of the NARS range and comes in blush and lipgloss form as well (hint- LOVE). Unfortunately the stars of that collection- Strawberry Fields and Rajasthan- were limited edition.

The things that made me fall in love with NARS are the same things that keep me coming back for more. Consistency, high-quality, trend-setting and impeccable formulations are all reasons that make me swoon for new NARS releases and have me waiting for each new seasonal collection.

My First NARS Products Swatches

Swatches L-R: Dolce Vita, Strawberry Fields, Douceur, Rajasthan Duo, Mangrove

Dolce Vita has a nice semi-sheer formula that is a my-lips-but-better shade and perfect for everyday wear. The formula is comfortable and movable, and doesn’t dry my lips out.

Strawberry Fields is only the greatest NARS lipgloss OF ALL TIME. It’s thicker than their other glosses which normally would turn me off but the color, pigmentation and staying-power are all top-notch.

Douceur is a shade that you have probably read about before. It’s easily one of the most natural looking blushes ever created. It acts as a blush and contour in one on my skin tone-adding just the right amount of color and definition. Silky and long-wearing, it’s definitely a favorite.

Rajasthan is also my favorite NARS eyeshadow duo that I own. I waffled on and off about it in August 2010 (so much that I can actually remember the hot, sunny day that I pressed the submit button on my very first NARS order). I have never regretted it. I love the shiny and dimensional golden taupe. You know, one of those shades you can wear all over the lid and it looks like you’ve blended in 2-3 shades instead? And the Peacock shade, swooon. It’s teal, it’s peacock-y and brilliantly gorgeous.

Mangrove is a love or leave shade but for me it’s total love. I wear this on the lashline (often with Rajasthan, though the pairing isn’t an immediately obvious one). Its smooth and slightly less pigmented so it does require a little layering to get the effect you see above. That doesn’t bother me as I have yet to find a shade from another brand that can rival this.

Reminiscing about my first time with NARS was fun. It brought me back to the days when I imagined spending $20+ on an eyeshadow or blush was ridiculous (I guess I’ve just become accustomed to being charged more-though not necessarily something I agree with). Do you remember your first products from a brand? What are your NARS must-haves?

  1. This was a fun read! Even though I own several pinky-brown blushes, I always end up thinking I still need Douceur. I honestly can’t remember what my first NARS purchase was, but I use their Radiant Creamy Concealer and Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base every single day, and Deep Throat blush is a lifetime fave! :)

what a great list of colors and shades!!! it’s nice finding old favorites! my first NARS products were my first blushes of my life! NARS O and DT- typical eh?

    • Danielle says:

I still don’t own Orgasm! I have the multiple tint in it (is that what they’re called?) and it’s pretty but intense with the gold. Maybe the blush version is better!

  3. Paris B says:

I have Rajasthan and I haven’t been able to work for me very well but I like how you’ve worn it so I might try that!

    • Danielle says:

Thanks Paris! At first the peacock shade is intimidating and can be a bit of trouble to get the right blending, but as a liner or outer V color it’s hard to screw up :)

  4. LOVE that pop of yellow-green on the bottom! I’m a huge fan of that look and you look so pretty!

  5. Ugh I want strawberry fields so badly now, that color is amazing!

  6. Katrina says:

i’ve always wanted to have strawberry fields lipgloss but never had the chance to get it and now NARS has been pulled off from the shelves here in the middle east :( anyway, love your collection! :)

  7. I love this look! The yellow bottom lash line is very unexpected :-)

Great post! My first experience with Nars came in the way of Nepal eyeshadow. Love it, but it’s currently MIA. I really need to look for it! My other favorites from Nars are the Larger Than Life lipgloss in Como and the Radiant Creamy Concealer. Oh, and I almost forgot about Nico, which is a blush, but I use it as a finishing powder.

  9. Tiffany says:

Love the lime green on your lower lash line! Glad to see we both love Douceur, for obvious reasons! :D I also love Dolce Vita and Strawberry Fields! Now, I just need Dolce Vita in blush form…

  10. Latoya says:

I have to say, Rajasthan really is an awesome duo! I don’t wear it a ton for whatever reason, but then I’ll remember that golden taupe-y shade…FABULOUS. And Dolce Vita is on my list of shades to get, along with Douceur (I think). And Strawberry Fields! SUCH a gorg color!!!
